The Claddagh Ring

A claddagh ring

Pronounced as 'Cladda', the Claddagh ring dates back to the 1700's.  It originates from the small fishing village of Claddagh near Galway, Ireland.  The heart represents love, the hands for friendship, and the crown for loyalty.

Symbolism

The Claddagh ring can be worn in three different ways.

  • Worn on the right hand with the heart pointing outwards signifies that the wearer has not yet found love.

  • Worn on the right hand with the heart pointing inwards means that love is being considered.

  • Worn on the left hand with the heart facing inwards shows that two loves have joined forever.

Folk stories

There are several folk stories surrounding the origins of the Claddagh ring.

The most popular story is that it was created by Richard Joyce of Galway.  It is said that while travelling to the West Indies, he was captured by Algerian pirates.  He was sold as a slave to a Moorish goldsmith, who trained him in the art of metalworking.  In 1689 he was released after a demand from King William III.  Joyce returned home and created the Claddagh ring.
