Description

Basil is an annual herb which grows to approximately 50cm (20in).   Leaves are oval in shape and shiny.  The flowers are small and white.

Background information

Basil originates from India.  It is commonly known as Sweet Basil.  Other species include Holy Basil and Bush Basil.  Holy basil is the sacred herb of the Goddess Lakshmi.  Basil is excellent for digestive problems.

Traditional uses

Basil was traditionally used as an aphrodisiac.  It was also used to ward of evil spirits.

Parts used

The leaves, flowering tops and essential oil are used.  The leaves and flowering tops should be harvested as the plant comes into flower.

Current uses

Digestive system:- flatulence, stomach cramps, colic, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, intestinal worms
Nervous system:- depression, anxiety, insomnia, nervous tension, nervous irritability, fatigue

It can also be used for epilepsy, migraine and whooping cough.

Used externally the leaves act as an insect repellent and the juice from the leaves is useful in relieving pain from insect bites and stings.
